This course is designed for classroom teachers to support investigations of natural environments and wildlife through Challenge Based Learning, with a focus on Australian fauna. It provides a range of teaching and learning materials in the form of a Science unit. This unit is primarily designed to support Stage 3 – Year 5/6. The teaching and learning materials in this course will need to be adapted to suit other stages.
This unit of work is best taught using the suggested sequence outlined in this course. To maximise engagement, it is suggested that students are introduced to the topic in the playground where they are given the opportunity to explore their natural surroundings. To get the most out of this course students require access to iPads and the suggested apps listed in the course.
The Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre is one of twenty two Environmental Education Centres operated by the NSW Department of Education and Communities to help students and teachers with fieldwork, environmental education and education for sustainability.
The centre caters for all NSW Department of Education and Communities schools K-12 in the Sydney metropolitan area. Students outside of the metropolitan area are catered for via Connected Classrooms technology. The centre offers a variety of programs which can be tailored to fit the needs of your students and the curriculum. Programs can be conducted at the Field of Mars Reserve, Buffalo Creek Reserve, by video conference or we can come to you.
